Everyone’s inclination when starting a business is to cast a wide net. Often when starting a business, you’re doing so from a scarcity mindset. You think, “I need whatever client I can get. I need to start making money. I need to start growing my business. So anyone that comes my way, I want to take them on as a client. The wider my audience is, the more likely it is that I’ll find someone. If everyone is my audience, I’m going to bump into them every day.” But, surprisingly, the reality is THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE. The most effective thing you can do to grow your business and have a successful business is to get incredibly specific about who your target audience is. When you get super clear, you’re able to get super targeted in where you go, how you talk about your business, and where you find your future fans and clients.

For example, dating. If you have no defined preferences or requirements in a partner and you look at everyone of dating age, what are the chances your going to find your person? BUT if you narrow by sexual preference, values, priorities, interests, lifestyle etc. then you’re getting a more likely pool of candidates. Then once you have a better idea of the type of partner you’re looking for, you have a better idea of where to find them. If you want someone who does yoga and is super health-conscious, you probably won’t find them out at a bar at 2 am on a tuesday. No, you’ll go to a 6am fitness or yoga class. And when you narrow it down like that, you’re more likely to find someone who is aligned with your core values and more likely to have a long term successful relationship.

So before you get started building your website, your social, and your brand identity, you need to get really clear on WHO you’re doing it all for. If you can figure out who your audience is, you’ll learn what’s important to them, then you can figure out where to find them, and once you know all those things you can figure out how to sell to them.

You’re nowhere without your audience. Rock stars wouldn’t be famous without fans. If you don’t have an audience you have no one to sell to and your business won’t thrive. You are nothing without your fans. So you need to start thinking about who your fans are (other than us, of course).

This exercise is known as persona building – which is basically the intentional process of defining, describing, visualizing your perfect client/customer/audience so you’re crystal clear on who you’re speaking to, selling to, and seeking out. Always.

And guess what? When you are always speaking to that person – to what they need, care about, desire, and crave, and doing so where they’re actually hanging out and listening – you actually start to reach them!

We’re going to deep dive into exactly how you can nail this process in our e-course that’s launching next month (sign up for our waitlist here), but in the meantime I want you to take the easy baby step of simply starting to PAY ATTENTION. Pay attention to every interaction you have when you speak about your current or future business, whether it’s online or offline. Pay attention to the things that light the conversation up and the things that bring the vibe to a full stop. Pay attention to who exactly is paying attention to you and what you’re throwing down. Pay attention to the people you actually LIKE interacting with. Pay attention to where and when and how you’re meeting them.

Then start probing deeper, whether by asking them more questions directly or by way of a little data analysis if you’re digital. Find out what they really care about, not just surface level shit. Think about what makes them truly listen and feel heard. Really think about why you like them and why they like you.

Then grab a notebook and write it ALL down in the name of research. Get ridiculously detailed, as if you were the first person to set foot in a strange new land, and are solely responsible for reporting back to the world everything you find. Then, when it comes time to fleshing out your dream audience personas, you’ll have a pretty fantastic (likely annotated and illustrated too, you overachiever) field guide to help create a far more robust and realistic persona than you ever could by mere guesswork!
